Please take a minute to read through these questions we are often asked.
- What days do you operate?
- Our trips depart on an “on demand” basis. Trips usually start at 9am or 1pm in the summer months and mid morning in the winter (May to September).
- Do I need any previous experience?
- As all our trips are guided, experience is not required as all relevant instruction is provided.
- How fit do I need to be?
- A minimal level of fitness is required for sea kayaking trips. The pace is always adjusted to suit the group and we have frequent comfort stops. Guides instruct clients on easy ways to paddle and will rapidly develop your skills. Enthusiasm is more important than fitness.
- Are there any guides?
- Yes, all our tours are guided. Our guides are experienced sea-kayakers and have a wealth of local knowledge.
- Do you provide rental kayaks?
- The area is unsuitable for rentals due to its rugged tidal nature and many of the highlights along the way are difficult to locate.
- Can I book in advance?
- Yes. Bookings are recommended but not essential outside peak
summer holiday time. Always call ahead - trips may be already fully booked
or sea conditions maybe unsuitable.
Please note: If weather conditions are deemed unsuitable by the guide, we will postpone or cancel your trip. This is in the interest of your safety. A full refund will be given.
- What happens if it rains?
- Often we are told by visitors that rain days are fantastic. If weather conditions are deemed unsuitable a decision will be made by the operations manager.
'As a rule of thumb we can kayak in the rain, we can kayak in the wind but we don't kayak in the wind and rain.'
- Where can we stay?
- We have limited accommodation at our base. (Max 4 people). Alternatively you can stay at one of the local B&Bs/homestays or at the beach campground.
- How do I get to the CBK base?
- Our base is 20 minutes drive from Nelson toward Picton. Travelling
from Nelson you turn left off State Highway at the Happy Valley Skywire highway
sign (the Cable Bay Rd.). Drive exactly 6kms down the Cable Bay Rd, until
you see the sign 'Towing vehicles slow down trailers turning', we are just
beyond these on the right hand side below the road. If you are in a campervan
pull over on the parking bay beyond the driveway.
- Will I get wet?
- Your feet will get wet as you enter the kayak from the water. Spray skirts are provided to keep the sea out of your kayak. However some people may get wet when sitting. With the small amount of water transferred as you enter the kayak, or if the spray skirt is not properly attached.
- What do I wear?
- Suitable clothing (ie shorts and warm top). Swimming gear and towel. Change of clothes. Camera. Sunglasses, sunscreen & sun hat. Water bottle.
- How many people are on each trip?
- We require a minimum of 2 people.
- Do you run instruction courses?
- Yes, on an “on demand” basis. These are geared to the level of experience you have. Full details will be posted on this site soon but until then feel free to contact us.
- Do you have off-street carparking?
- Yes
- What is the water temperature?
- Summer approx 20C
Winter approx 14C
- Can I snorkel?
- Yes, Snorkelling gear can be provided FREE if you do not
have your own.
- Do we use single or double kayaks?
- We use double kayaks on all our guided tours as the extra stability in a variety of sea conditions ensures steady progress.
For those with self-rescue skills single kayaks can be provided on
request.
- Should I bring food?
- We recommend buying food in Nelson/Picton/Blenheim as local shopping is limited to the fuel station...Especially if you are considering staying in Cable Bay overnight or afterwards.
- Will my camera stay dry?
- We provide dry bags for cameras and the kayaks have a safe waterproof hull for storage. BUT you are responsible for any loss or damage while actually using your camera.
- Could I fall out?
- Double kayaks ensure this is very unlikely however briefings cover capsize drill as a safety precaution.
- Can I get a refund?
- If weather conditions are deemed unsuitable by the guide, we will cancel or postpone your trip. This is in the interest of your safety. A full refund will be given.
Refunds in other circumstances will be at the discretion of the management.
Refunds will NOT be given for 'no-shows'. You must contact us at least 12 hours before departure, if you need to cancel, in order to receive a refund.
